Dr Villamil completed a Spine Surgery Fellowship at the Harvard University Medical School in Boston, MA. He currently practices in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Bartlesville, Oklahoma. He also continues to perform work in his native Puerto Rico.
He is the author of the Neurovascular Classification For The Lumbar Spine, which is presently used by surgeons worldwide to make surgery safer for patients.
At Spine by Villamil, MD, we redefine what’s possible in modern spine surgery.
At Spine by Villamil, MD, Dr. Villamil utilizes the minimally invasive XLIF (eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion) technique, which stands apart from traditional fusion approaches by accessing the spine through a small incision on the side of the body rather than from the front or back. This lateral corridor allows the soft tissues and psoas muscle to be gently dilated instead of cut, while real-time nerve monitoring guides the surgeon safely past critical nerves. The approach also enables placement of a large-footprint interbody implant that effectively restores disc height, provides strong stability, and achieves indirect nerve decompression. Compared with conventional open fusions, XLIF typically results in less blood loss, shorter operative times, reduced hospital stays, and a faster return to normal activities.
